Secure Research Enclave for University Research Security Office

Overview:
In 2019, a major Texas University Research Security Office collaborated with VMware, Dell EMC, and Optimus Technology Group to create a Secure Research Enclave. This specialized project aimed to deliver a highly secure system that would enable advanced research while adhering to the stringent Department of Defense standards outlined in DFARS 252.204-7012. Optimus Technology Group was responsible for software configuration, contributing 45% of the total project hours, while Dell EMC and VMware handled hardware and project management, respectively.

Scope of Work:
Optimus Technology Group played a crucial role in designing and deploying the Dell VxRack system, which hosted VMware Horizon technology to provide secured virtual desktops. The enclave employed a zero-trust framework through VMware NSX micro-segmentation. Additionally, multiple layers of Palo Alto Networks firewalls secured edge networking, ensuring maximum data protection and regulatory compliance.

Personnel and Certifications:
The project involved two engineers and two project managers, each holding VMware VCAP and Palo Alto PCNSE certifications. Their expertise in virtualization and network security was pivotal to the enclave’s successful design and deployment.

Innovative Solutions Delivered:
The team implemented advanced network and desktop virtualization technology, creating a secure, research-capable system. The zero-trust framework ensured strict network segmentation, and multi-layer firewall protection safeguarded sensitive research data. The enclave delivered seamless performance while adhering to the highest security standards.

Conclusion:
The Secure Research Enclave project underscores the collaborative expertise of VMware, Dell EMC, and Optimus Technology Group in creating a secure, flexible, and efficient research environment. This initiative empowered the University researchers with robust technology while ensuring compliance with DoD standards, reflecting the team’s innovative approach to network and desktop virtualization technology.
